In the book Brat: Kids of Warriors much of Jack McMasters and the brats life centers around the airfield located just below the cliff near the Glass House where they lived. That airfield was known as the flugplatz. Sometime around 1930, when flying airplanes became popular, the original civilian airfield, called a flugplatz, was built there. By 1935 the Luftwaffe acquired the airfield, and built an air force base there. During World War II the Nazi's used it for Luftwaffe pilot training. The flugplatz was one of the only airfields to remain intact at the end of World War II, at which time the Americans took it over.
During the story, and in reality, it was this airfield that was used by the commander of the 4th Armored Division. It was also the place where German/American week was held.
