In ancient times the area around Cooke Barracks was nothing but meadows, farmland and woods. Then sometime around 1930, when flying airplanes became popular, a civilian airfield, called the flugplatz, was built there. But in 1935 the Luftwaffe acquired the airfield, and built it into a military base known as Fliegerhorst Kaserne. Initially an air reconnaissance group was stationed there. But with the outbreak of World War II Hitler and the Nazi's decided to use it for Luftwaffe pilot training. They trained on lots of different kinds of aircraft, but mostly they trained fighter pilots.”
